Lutao was born and raised in Shijiazhuang, Hebei province, China. After obtaining his BSc (2013-2017) and MSc (2017-2020) degrees at Lanzhou University, he was enrolled at Tsinghua University in 2020 for his PhD study and joined the Jiao’s group.
During his doctoral studies, he focused on N-boryl pyridine anion chemistry. He proposed the concept of modular photocatalytic systems and characterized the in-situ generated photoactive intermediates. In addition, he also carried out studies on structure-activity relationships and mechanisms. Subsequently, he applied this system to the single electron reduction reactions of various challenging substrates. Based on the research, he successfully synthesized and developed a series of novel photocatalysts for redox reactions. Compared to existing systems, these catalysts exhibited superior reactivity.
After obtaining his PhD degree (2024), he joined the Xiaheng Zhang Group at Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) as a postdoctoral researcher.
